RSS Feeds – The Unsung Hero of The Internet
I believe without a doubt that I am better informed on a wide range of topics because of my RSS Feeds. I try to keep my feeds in Bloglines down to 25 or 30. I take RSS feeds from journals and news sources on a wide range of topics. This includes feeds form technology and educational journals as well as news from traditional outlets like newspapers and magazines.
The feeds allow me to quickly preview a wide range of news and information and then decide to read the complete article or move on to other items. This exposes me to large amounts of information and then gives me the ability to quickly evaluate this information. I also have the option of saving the article to return later to read the item when I have time to give it my full attention.
Another advantage is that I can tailor my feeds to my immediate needs. For example I may be writing an article on using streaming videos in online courses. I would search for RSS feeds form both educational and technical journals that covered these topic areas. This would give me a steady stream of articles on this topic and the detailed information I need to write about the subject.
To help anyone interested in using RSS Feeds I have created a page with links to RSS resources and a tutorial or two on how to setup and maintain your RSS Feeds.
