Bloom’s Digital Taxonomy
Bloom’s Taxonomy has been a mainstay for many years but the literal application of Blooms has also been a problem for some years. Applying Bloom’s in real world applications may not be hard in principle but doing so and still maintaining a coherent and student centered work-flow can be problematic. For example, take the one minute paper, a very simple application of pedagogy that will assess the students grasp of most subjects at one of the higher levels of the taxonomy. This is really easy to do in the classroom but quite hard to facilitate online. Now we are seeing the beginnings of a dialog on what many are calling the new Bloom’s Digital Taxonomy.
If you visit this page scroll down and take a minute to look over the “Bloom’s Digital Taxonomy Concept Map”. This looks a lot like the old Bloom’s but look a little closer. You will see all these new collaborative tools like wikis and blogs that are becoming an integral part of the taxonomy landscape. I have been designing and developing these highly collaborative courses for the past three years and it’s great to see that the theory is finally beginning to catch up with the reality.
